The Making Of Silk Wool
Among the most interesting natural fibers present in nature is silk. The history of silk runs back more than 3000 years to the Chinese, who made use of this special fiber. The demand for silk goods and garments has been strong season to season and year to year. China is still the largest manufacturer of silk and exports it all over the world. This silk is identified by the term "China Silk" on all products made from it.
And so how is silk produced? Lets take a look at the process. The silk worms natural habitat is in the mulberry tree. They are planted in large numbers for the silk worm breeding program.
Once the eggs from the silk worm emerge, they are then fed mulberry leaves. The little caterpillars grow quickly, in only thirty five days they are ten thousand times heavier in comparison with when first hatched. At this juncture they begin to turn a silk cocoon.
The silk manufacture commences with the worm, it is produced from glands in the silkworm's head. The silk is then spun out in liquid shape through holes called spinneret. When this liquid touches the surroundings, it becomes solid and develops silk. These little worms can each spin almost a mile of silk and they engulf by themselves in a cocoon over a few days.
At this juncture the worm would changeover to a moth. Nevertheless just before that takes place they are generally killed. The purpose of killing them at this point is because when they are in a position to exit the cocoon they will secrete a fluid which dissolves the silk to allow them to exit the cocoon. This spoils the silk. Certainly not all of them are killed, a section are kept for breeding.
After the cocoon are harvested, the undamaged cocoons are usually brushed to find the end of the silk filament. These are now put on a reel. Up to one thousand yards of silk material are contained in each cocoon. This is called raw silk. A silk yarn can be made from joining several filaments. Taking this yarn and combining it with wool creates silk wool, it is one of the most beautiful products used in the making of apparels or goods, beautiful silk wool fabric.
